UK's Mass Wasting Hazard

The United Kingdom's main mass wasting hazards are landslides. In many countries landslides can be caused by earthquakes. Since earthquakes are quite rare in the UK, this is not the cause of their mass wasting events. The main trigger for landslides here is the heavy rainfall. This is because the rainfall effects the soil moisture- causing it to slide.

Landslides occur due to the effect of gravity, but there are other factors that can aid in the instability of a slope. These are drainage, geology, topography, weathering, and construction. The sloping of landslides can damage buildings, structures, and properties.

The United Kingdom has a National Landslide Database which records landslides. There are currently more than 17,000 landslides in the database. Many are ancient. This database and tracking can help plan future developments and structures more safely. This is done by tracking the type of landslide, age and the cause.

They also use satellite imagery to map and characterize landslides for the use of relief agencies. The UK also has a Landslide Response Team.
